“What exactly does it do?”

It prices any cart with Shopify’s own calculation, takes the price apart layer by layer and says why a discount or code didn’t apply. Then it keeps checking the carts that matter.

Simulator

“Why does this cart cost what it costs?”

Pick the products, type the codes and the country it ships to, then calculate the price. Shopify prices the cart, and the price X-ray takes it apart: product prices, product discounts, order discounts, shipping, tax and the total.

Every discount that could have mattered and wasn’t applied gets a sentence saying why. When two discounts clash, you see the total with each one alone. Shipping options show as checkout shows them, with how far the cart is from free shipping.

On Pro and Business, price a cart as one of your customers, so discounts only they get apply.

A customer, by emailI put in SUMMER20 for my three boards and nothing came off. Is it expired?

Combinations

“Which of our discounts block each other?”

Every pair of discounts that can be live at the same time is checked: pairs where only one side is set to combine, so neither stacks; two product discounts on the same items, where only one applies; scheduled discounts that will clash; and codes that ended but are still being used.

The discounts that block the most come first, so one setting fixes a whole row, and each pair says how to fix it. On Pro and Business, the matrix puts every discount against every other.

Discount coupons joined like bones; the joint between WAX15 and FREESHIP is broken.

Test carts

“Will I know when a promo breaks?”

Save any cart from the Simulator as a test cart; the price it was saved with is the expected result. Test carts are checked once a week on Free, every day on Pro and every hour on Business, and on Pro and Business also 10 minutes after a discount, shipping or market change.

Each one is OK, Changed or Error. Free keeps 2, Pro 25 and Business 100; on Business each test cart can be checked in up to 10 countries.

Saved carts as X-rays clipped to a lightbox; the middle one's price has moved.

Change alerts

“What changed, and what caused it?”

A test cart whose price moves gets a change page: the expected and the new price X-ray, one sentence per change, the likely causes (the store changes made just before), and what to do: accept the new result, or undo it in Shopify.

Pro emails you with the likely cause; Business also posts it to a Slack channel. On Free, changes are shown in the app. A test cart can be muted for 7 days.

From Checkout X-Ray, today 14:12Price changed: Hydrogen with HYDRO10 now $530.00 (was $540.00)Most likely cause: $10 off $80 was edited (today 14:02). Combines with product discounts: off → on. If stacking was intended, accept the new result.

Refund Watch

“Are we refunding more than Shopify calculated?”

Each refund of the last 60 days sits next to Shopify’s own calculation: Shopify’s amount, goodwill, shipping only, more or less than calculated, or a return with a restocking fee. Free shows the totals.

Pro and Business show every refund and where refunds pile up (by product, customer and payment method), and alert you a minute after one breaks your rules: goodwill over an amount, above Shopify’s amount, or a customer’s third refund. Shopify doesn’t let apps stop a refund, so Refund Watch tells you right after.

A returned parcel and its receipt; the refund paid runs past Shopify's amount.

Suggested test carts

“Where do I start?”

After you install, Home suggests up to five test carts built from your own discounts: the two most likely to clash, your newest code, a cart just under free shipping, and your automatic discounts.

Try each one in the Simulator, or add them all as test carts. Nothing is saved until you choose.

What it doesn’t do

It never edits your discounts

It explains and links to the discount in your Shopify admin. Changing a setting is always yours to do.

Nothing changes for customers

There’s no storefront widget, and nothing is added to your theme or checkout.

It checks prices, not pages

It doesn’t click through your store in a browser or test whether pages load.

Shopify calculates, it explains

Prices come from Shopify’s own calculation, never from a copy of Shopify’s rules. Nothing is ordered.

Answer the next one with an X-ray.

  1. Install on Shopify

Add Checkout X-Ray from the Shopify App Store. It opens in your Shopify admin, on the Free plan.

  2. Build the customer’s cart

Open the Simulator. Pick the products, type the code they used and the country it ships to, then calculate the price.

  3. Read the answer

The price X-ray shows each layer, and every code that wasn't applied gets a sentence saying why. Save it as a test cart to have it checked again.

Checkout X-Ray isn’t on the Shopify App Store yet. Leave your email and we’ll tell you the day it is.
