“It says sold out, but your site says it’s in stock.”

When no shipping rate reaches a country, the online store shows the products as sold out there and checkout says “Shipping not available”. Shopify still calculates a total.

Why it happens

Shipping rates live in shipping zones, one set per shipping profile. A country that’s in no zone of the profile that ships a product has no rate, so the online store shows that product as sold out there, and checkout says “Shipping not available”.

Shopify still calculates €633.95 for this cart, so that number isn’t a checkout price. The example is the lab store before it had a shipping zone for the EU: one Dawn board to Berlin.

Other causes get their own sentence:

  • Carrier rates only. When every rate for the country comes from a carrier, the carrier can return none, often because the parcel is over its limits. The sentence gives the cart’s weight against the carrier’s limit per parcel (USPS 70 lb, UPS and FedEx 150 lb, DHL Express 70 kg, Canada Post 30 kg, Australia Post 22 kg), or names the one item that’s over it on its own.
  • A rate app no zone uses. A shipping app that’s set up but in no shipping zone never shows its rates at checkout. From Shopify’s API version 2026-10, a newly installed one is no longer added to your general profile by itself.
  • Stock. A sold-out line can leave the cart with no delivery too. Then the cause is stock, not the shipping zone, and the sentence lists the lines.
  • Quantity. When a cart with more than one of an item gets no rate, it’s priced once more with one of each, to say at what quantity rates stop.

What Checkout X-Ray reads

  • The shipping profiles that ship the cart’s products, their zones for the country, and their rates.
  • On stores that set shipping per market, the markets and their shipping options.
  • The rate apps (carrier services) that are turned on, and whether any zone uses them.

What to look at in Shopify

Settings → Shipping and delivery: the profile the sentence names, and whether a zone in it includes the country. On stores that set shipping per market, Settings → Markets: whether a market includes the country and has shipping turned on.

Answer the next one with an X-ray.

  1. Install on Shopify

Add Checkout X-Ray from the Shopify App Store. It opens in your Shopify admin, on the Free plan.

  2. Build the customer’s cart

Open the Simulator. Pick the products, type the code they used and the country it ships to, then calculate the price.

  3. Read the answer

The price X-ray shows each layer, and every code that wasn't applied gets a sentence saying why. Save it as a test cart to have it checked again.
