“My friend’s code doesn’t work for me.”
A discount can be limited to some customers or customer segments. Anyone else gets the same words checkout uses for a code from another market.

“VIP20 discount code isn’t available to you right now”
Checkout X-Ray says
VIP20 wasn't applied. VIP20 is only for some customers or segments; this test cart is a guest.
Why it happens
A discount’s customer eligibility can be all customers, or specific customers or segments. The code then works only when checkout knows the customer is one of them. A guest gets “isn’t available to you right now”: the same words as for a code that’s only for another market, which is why the message alone can’t tell you which it is.
VIP20 is a lab code for one customer. On 24 October 2026, typed into a guest cart with one Hydrogen board, it got the sentence above, and the cart stayed at $590.00. Priced as the customer it’s for (16 October 2026), the same code applied: $480.00.
The same $590.00 cart with another code typed gets another sentence: LABOLD10 (it expired), NOPE123 (no discount uses it) and WAX15 (it’s for other products). Checkout shows the same $590.00 every time.
What Checkout X-Ray reads
- Whether each discount is for all customers, or for some customers or segments.
- A test cart is a guest unless you price it as one of your customers (Pro and Business). A guest never gets these discounts; a customer gets them only if eligible, and the sentence says which.
- For a customer, the app reads only their ID, tags and number of orders, never their name or contact details.
What to look at in Shopify
The discount’s customer eligibility, in Discounts: which customers or segments it’s for. Then whether the customer is one of them. To see the price they’d get, price the cart as that customer in the Simulator.
The sentence Checkout X-Ray writes for this reason, filled in for each cart: Discount is only for some customers or segments; this test cart is a guest.

The price X-ray shows each layer, and every code that wasn't applied gets a sentence saying why. Save it as a test cart to have it checked again.
